HSW 65 – Healthy Shift Worker Wellness Events with Candice Bauer

As someone who works irregular hours, have you ever had any “healthy shift worker training” throughout your shift working career?  Quite simply, has anyone ever entered your workplace (that actually worked shift work themselves and knows exactly what you’re going through) and provided you with some practical strategies to help you to manage your health whilst working 24/7?

I’m going to assume your answer is a “no”, which is why you’re definitely going to want to listen to this episode!

Having spent close to two decades working shift work myself, and not once receiving any help or support on how to stay healthy whilst working 24/7, I’m now taking my healthy-shift-worker message around Australia, in the form of Healthy Shift Worker Wellness Events.

In today’s episode, we’re talking with Emergency Care Nurse Candice Bauer, who is also the founder of BareByBauer, an Australian based body and skin care company.  Candice is so passionate about her health and that of others, that she’s invited me up to her hometown of Bundaberg to talk all things to do with health and wellness.

The good news is that not only is this wellness event going to be a wealth of information for those working shift work, but it’s also designed to be an invaluable resource for anyone struggling with their health – whether that’s in the form of poor sleep, stress, weight fluctuations and much, much more!

So if you live in Bundaberg, then I look forward to seeing you there on Friday, the 28th of September 2018 :-).

HSW 63: Managing Stress with Dr Maria Zuschmann

Did you know that working 24/7 puts your body into a state of “biological stress?”  And that’s even before we set foot into a stressful workplace!

It’s for this exact reason, that I’ve invited Dr Maria Zuschmann, a Chiropractor and Personal Performance Coach based in Shell Harbour on the south coast of New South Wales to come in and chat to us on all things to do with stress.

Having been in the wellness industry for over 20 years, Maria also happens to be the voice (and face) behind the Queen of Stress podcast, along with having facilitated 100’s of wellness workshops over the past 14 years.

So if you’re currently feeling stressed, overwhelmed or just downright ‘tired and wired’, then this episode is for you.

In this informative and entertaining episode chatting with Maria, you’re going to learn:

  • What is stress, and why not all stress is bad for us.
  • The 3 main types of stress
  • What makes some people more resilient to stress
  • 3 tips to help you to reduce stress in your shift working life and much, much more!

HSW 62: When It’s Time To Drop A Few Balls with Audra Starkey

Today’s episode is super short as I go solo and talk about what’s going on behind the scenes at Healthy Shift Worker Inc.

Given it’s 2018 and we’re currently living in a world where when we ask people “how are you going?” – it’s often replied in an almost automatic response of “I’m just so busy”.

But why is that?  How have we morphed into a society where we’re trying to juggle so many things at once, which means pushing ourselves to a point where our bodies never really get enough downtime to rest and recuperate properly.  This is not great for anyone, but it’s even worse if you’re doing so on limited amounts of sleep – AKA working 24/7.

In this very short episode, I talk about:

  • Why “dropping a few balls” can be a great thing for our health, and what “ball” I have decided to drop for awhile.
  • What I’m going to be doing now that I’ve dropped this one ball – even for a short period of time.
  • Another big announcement that is going to be great for anyone living in Australia!

Healthy Shift Worker – An Oxymoron Or A Reality?

Which one do you believe to be true?

Do you believe it’s possible to be a healthy shift worker?  Because I often have people say to me that it’s a bit of an oxymoron.  That’s it not a reality.  That it’s impossible to remain healthy whilst working 24/7.

Well I’m not going to disagree entirely because let’s face it, it’s no easy feat to feel all “bright and chipper” when faced with a string of early, late or night shifts.

But I most certainly believe it’s possible to be a healthy shift worker.

Because if it wasn’t possible, then every single shift worker on the planet would be unhealthy.  They would ALL have type 2 diabetes, they would ALL be overweight, they would ALL have cardiovascular disease, they would ALL have mental health problems … you get my drift.

But this is definitely not the case.  There are plenty of people who work shiftwork, and remain healthy too.

It’s just hard.  It takes a lot of work.  Self-care, prioritising our health, and having a supportive network of friends and family around you will certainly give you an advantage.

But often it takes more than that.  Often it requires us to form a “tribe” of sorts.  As in surrounding ourselves with other like-minded people who are on a similar mission as ours – that being to work shift work, and remain healthy too.

It’s why I created the Healthy Shift Workers Facebook Group.  A place where other shift workers can come together for help, support and guidance without being judged.

And it’s ONLY for shift workers.

So if you haven’t already done so, and you’d like to become part of this tribe too, then feel free to Click Here and join over 1000 other shift workers from all around the world, and let’s work together to create a ‘healthy-shift-worker-movement’ that stretches all around the globe.

See you on the other side!

HSW 61: Constipation and SIBO with Lynda Griparic

This week we’re talking all things digestive health – in particular constipation and small intestinal bowel overgrowth, otherwise known as SIBO.  Given shift workers are often plagued with gastrointestinal complaints due to the biological stress associated with ongoing disruption to our sleep/wake cycle, together with diets that are often made up of processed foods which contain little fibre, this is an episode that you don’t want to miss!

Lynda Griparic is a Naturopath, Nutritionist, Writer and Yoga teacher with over 16 years of experience in the health industry who specialises in digestive health, in particular SIBO and constipation. She has extensive experience in running healthy, effective and sustainable bowel care programs and has expertise in investigating and treating the underlying causes of gut disturbance. Lynda has an intense interest in poo and she’s also the creator of the delicious BetterMe Tea a tea designed to promote improved gut health and digestion – assisting those who struggle with constipation and sluggish bowel movements to go to the bathroom with ease.

In this informative and entertaining episode chatting with Lynda, you’re going to learn:

  • Why it’s important to have regular bowel movements
  • Some of the causes and triggers of constipation
  • Exactly what is SIBO, and how it can impact on your health
  • Foods to avoid and support your gut health whilst working 24/7
